Best Things to Do in Boone & Blowing Rock with Kids (Local favorites)

Boone and Blowing Rock are incredibly family-friendly, but with so many options, it can be hard to know where to start—especially with kids.

These are some of the best places and experiences for families in the area, with a mix of outdoor fun, unique stops, and spots where kids can really enjoy themselves.

A Full Day in Valle Crucis (A must do!)

One of the most special places for families to explore is the Valle Crucis area (pronounced “Valley Crew-sis”). It’s a beautiful, open valley where you could easily spend an entire day-or even a full weekend-with kids.

Mast General Store (BOTH locations)

There are actually two Mast General Stores here, and both are worth visiting. Each one has its own character, and they’re close enough to visit in one trip. Inside, you’ll find everything from old-fashioned candy barrels to outdoor gear—it’s a fun stop for both kids and adults.

Old Fashioned Ice Cream Stand + Creek

In the summer, behind the larger Mast store, there’s a classic ice cream stand right next to a crystal-clear stream. Kids can play in the water while enjoying ice cream—it’s one of those simple experiences that ends up being a highlight of the trip.

Valle Crucis Community Park

This park is perfect for letting kids run and play. There’s a playground, open fields for soccer or games, and plenty of space to spread out.

If you walk toward the back of the park, you’ll reach the Watauga River—a wide, shallow, and incredibly beautiful river that’s popular for tubing. On a warm day, this can easily turn into an all-day hangout spot.

Crab Orchard Falls (Nearby Adventure)

Just a short drive from Valle Crucis, Crab Orchard Falls is one of the best family-friendly hikes in the area. It’s a manageable hike with a big payoff—a stunning waterfall and a safe area for kids to splash and explore.
(Check out this post on other hikes as well!)

Apple Hill Farm (Alpaca Farm)

Not far from this area, there’s a local alpaca farm where kids can see and interact with the animals. It’s a unique experience and a fun add-on if you’re already exploring Valle Crucis.

Where should you stay in Boone & Blowing Rock?

Here’s our favorite place to stay

Check Out The Cabin Here!

This is one of those places that’s hard to forget. Set right on a beautiful creek with incredible views, it offers a peaceful, tucked-away feeling while still being close to everything. Thoughtfully stocked and designed for comfort, it’s the kind of place where slow mornings with coffee overlooking the water become your favorite part of the day.

So much more to explore!!

Gem Mining!

Gem mining is one of those activities kids absolutely love, and Foggy Mountain is one of the best places to do it in the area. They have multiple locations, but it’s a good idea to call ahead since hours can vary.

It’s worth going for one of the larger buckets—you can actually find some really beautiful stones. Many families even have jewelry made from what they find, which makes for a really special souvenir.

Classic Family Stops:

Tweetsie Railroad

A classic Boone attraction, especially for younger kids. It’s a Wild West-themed park with a train ride, shows, and activities that make it a memorable stop.

Downtown Boone & Blowing Rock

Both downtowns are easy and enjoyable place to walk around with kids. Shops, parks, fudge and ice cream stops make it a great low-key afternoon option with SO much to see for everyone!
