Best Hikes & Trails to Start With
Rough Ridge (Grandfather Mountain Area)
One of the best hikes in the entire area. Rough Ridge offers some of the most iconic views in Boone and Blowing Rock, and the Grandfather Mountain area as a whole is packed with incredible trails. If you only have time for one or two hikes, this area should be at the top of your list.
Crab Orchard Falls
A great option for families, this hike is about two miles round trip and much easier than many of the steeper trails in the area. It does start off a bit steep, but the payoff is a stunning cascading waterfall. There’s even a small swimming area at the bottom where kids can safely splash around—plus it’s a great spot for photos.
Hebron Falls
This is a beautiful hike that’s about three miles round trip. You’ll pass over a bridge, walk alongside water, and experience tons of natural beauty along the way. There are multiple cascading falls, and it’s not uncommon to see wildlife like deer. Bring a picnic lunch. You’re going to have an amazing time.

The Cone Manor is a historic 23-room mansion located right off the Blue Ridge Parkway near Blowing Rock. Originally built as a summer home, it’s now a National Historic Landmark surrounded by 25 miles of scenic carriage trails, apple orchards, and incredible views.
The trails here are wide, well-maintained, and perfect for a more relaxed hike. You’ll also get beautiful views overlooking Bass Lake, and everything is open year-round. It’s a great option if you want something scenic without a strenuous climb.
